Gavran chicken is not just another non veg preparation in Maharashtra. Its a phenomenon. Its endemic among true Marathi souls. People can fight with the whole world for the sacred bowl of Rassa. Basically the word Gavran means rustic, belonging to villages.  And traditionally  Indian villages have been relying on indigenous grown hens for the preparations. So now a days Gavran chicken in Pune and Mumbai is interpreted as countryside preparation made of non- broiler birds. Paradoxically its hardly followed in restaurants in Pune. But worry not!! Head to Pune Mumbai Highway, roughly 20 kms from Pune, below wakad bridge, you would find a not so posh, not so bright dhaba on your left. And the name is Ranjai, perhaps one of the best non veg hotel in Pune.

Menu is huge but lets not get into it. Keep it simple and go for Chicken Sukkha. Fresh chicken pieces seasoned in bunch of spices, red chili powder and finely chopped corriander leaves make for a great starter. It has got all the typical characteristics of Maharasthrian non veg food. flavour, texture and abundance of corriander. And their specialty is they cook it to on Desi chullhas (earthen stoves) making sure all the flavours and spices are absorbed into chicken. Squeeze a slice of lemon on it and indulge into deliciousness.

Main course can be none other than the favourite Chicken Handi. An auspicious vessel :p containing finely cooked chicken pieces in deep red gravy called RassaThe soul of Maharashtrian non vegetarian cooking. Every sip of it is full of warmth. Served in deep and wide steel bowls individually, keeping it hot till you finish everything. Go for  jowar and bajra bhakri  and crush it into the bowl full of Rassa, let it soak the goodness and there you are! Remarkable…If you want to turn your pure vegetarian friends into meat lovers, bring them here. Why not start with one of the best non veg hotel in Pune. Because every one has a right to education, internet and Gavran Chicken
